Rock ‘N' Roll and Grilled Cheese at The Queens Kickshaw

Queens is known as one of the more diverse boroughs of New York. From Flushing to Long Island City, the neighborhoods are populated by some of the most concentrated ethnic residents that I’ve encountered in my entire time in New York City. I live in Astoria, and my entire block is comprised of Indian restaurants, delis, and pharmacies.

However, there’s nothing more American than loud rock 'n' roll and grilled cheese. This is exactly what you’ll find at the Queens Kickshaw, a hole in the wall on Broadway in Astoria.  Upon visiting the other night, I was greeted by blasting rock and a minimalist atmosphere. After sitting down and taking a look at my clipboard menu, its hard not to miss that the beer menu is much more extensive than the actual food options. This must come for the belief that if you’re going to do something, you should do it well, as everything we had was fresh, surprising, and delicious.

After starting with some particularly tasty brews (I ordered a Blithering Idiot… I must find this beer again), we received our sandwiches. My dining partner opted for a more traditional route, selecting mozzarella and cheddar with a side of tomato soup that was more closely related to a marinara than actual soup. I was a bit more adventurous, choosing the gouda sandwich. The insides of bread were smoothed over with black bean hummus and guava jam, as well as pickled jalapenos mixed with the melted cheese. Each bite was surprisingly sweet and cheesy, but it was over much too quickly. Luckily, I had come prepared to eat, and went back for the Mushroom & Chestnut Stuffing, which was slathered with gruyere and a side of miso-mustard Pickles.

However, be warned, the joint is cash only, and you could end up forking over a few bills. Due to small portion size, I ended up spending more than anticipated. Although, this was the only drawback to my experience at the Kickshaw--it wasn’t a negligible one. But if you’re in the area with some cash to spend, it was an extremely delicious meal, and I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys a good grilled cheese (So, really… pretty much anyone).
