Summer is almost over but not for South Floridans! Living here means you never really have to put away your bathing suits.
South Florida is a place to see and be seen, and Colombian swimwear brand “Maaji,” understands that. Their eye-catching designs made them a favorite during this years Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week SWIM.
Each collection offers something for all body types. When asked about her source for inspiration, head designer Juliana Londono’s answer was clear: “the preservation of our environment and oceans.”
Maaji’s eco-friendly campaign “ Planting an Ocean of Trees” has planted 800 trees and counting in Colombia. "Maaji “Earth Warriors” feel responsible for finding different ways to give back to a giving planet," said Londono.
Londono focuses on bright colors and nude tones with neon's, pastels, floral and animal patterns, photographic print and contrasting piping. Their lingerie inspired elastic and trims, high wasted bottoms and structured swimsuits, such as body cons, were a crowd favorite.
“It is a very rewarding experience to see all of our hard work and dedication come to life on the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Swim runway,” Londono said. “To be given the opportunity to introduce our new collection to a global audience of press, retailers and consumers, is a blessing.”
Each collection is inspired by a “magical surreal story” that is the result of a long, creative process.
This collections Derby theme was clear throughout all elements of the show, from the custom runway backdrop to the styling of each model sporting equestrian riding helmets and gingham print jackets. “Our new collection is a very American inspired story, about the countryside and equestrianism,” she said.
Maaji also launched ‘Studio Collection’ this year, which is their first line of women’s fitness apparel and includes athletic tops, tanks and sports bras, as well as yoga pants and shorts. Basically, everything you need to get beach bod ready!
We asked Juliana what are the perfect bathing suit styles and fits for Latinas, and here is what she had to say:
1. PETITE: If you are petite, try to avoid halters, tankinis or two-pieces with long torsos, it will make you appear shorter. Feel free to wear padded tops with ruffles, bandeau or flare tops to enhance your shape.
2. ATHLETIC: Try to look for swimsuits with some feminine details like embellishments or girly prints. Stay away from bandeaus and boy-cut bottoms.
3. BUSTY: If you have a larger bust, we would recommend you wear structured tops to provide more support. Stay away from ruffles, pleats, embellishments or details that will create more volume.
