“Dark Knight Rises”: Anne Hathaway As Catwoman Revealed

We've seen Tom Hardy's new villain Bane (jacked up, wearing what looks to be a surgical mask designed by H.R. Giger) and now we have our Catwoman.

Anne Hathaway will be playing Selena Kyle aka Catwoman in "The Dark Knight Rises," the third installment in Christopher Nolan and Christian Bale's Batman trilogy which arrives next year.

Not that we're surprised, given Nolan's insistence on keeping the Bat-world as realistic as possible, but it's nice to see that they've apparently chosen not to go with cat-ears on Kyle's head. And although plot points are more closely guarded that Casey Anthony, this image does tell us that Catwoman, at some point, straddles Batman's Batcycle (hey now) and, we assume, enters The Matrix.

We kid. Although it's tough to make out much, word is that Nolan and company were inspired by the "functional" cat-burglar wear popularized by artists like Darwyn Cooke and Adam Hughes. And that definitely seems to be the case.

Hathaway will be the fourth cinematic Catwoman, following Lee Meriwether (who played her in 1966's "Batman" movie, as well as sharing cat-duties on the TV series with Julie Newmar and Eartha Kitt), Michelle Pfeiffer (1992's "Batman Returns," considered the gold standard), and Halle Berry (2004's "Catwoman," considered a golden turd).

"The Dark Knight Rises" hits theaters next July.
