Kerry Washington Breaks Her Silence Regarding Daughter's Birth: “I Am Filled With Gratitude”

Mother's Day was extra special for new mom Kerry Washington!

Sunday marked the first time the actress publicly acknowledged her daughter. Though she didn't address Isabelle Amarachi by name, the "Scandal" star tweeted, "Well...I still wont talk about my personal life on here. But...I see your tweets. And I am filled with gratitude! XO #HappyMothersDay."

The Neutrogena spokeswoman--who secretly wed former NFL player Nnamdi Asomugha last June, as first reported by E! News--gave birth at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in L.A. Apr. 21. In true Washington fashion, the actress managed to keep her baby news under wraps for a whopping 11 days.

Why is Washington so tight-lipped about her private life?

"I have girlfriends in this business who talk about their personal lives, and it works for them, and I love it. But not for me. I learned through experience that it doesn't work for me to talk about my personal life," the TV star told Glamour last year. "I've had earlier times in my career when I did talk about it. I was on the cover of a bridal magazine," she said, referring to her 2005 InStyle Weddings feature; she ended her engagement to actor David Moscow in 2007. "But I couldn't just turn around and say, 'I only want to talk about the good stuff, but not the bad stuff.' So I just thought, 'OK, no more.'"
