#OscarsSoWhite, Again: All-White Oscar Nominations Slammed on Social Media

The 88th annual Academy Awards released its 2016 nominees Thursday morning with a familiar look -- only white actors were nominated in the acting categories.

Should the Oscar statuettes be painted white?

Omar White of The Popcorn Reel tweeted so. "It's not golden when you consistenly ignore one gender and other races," he wrote.

The 88th annual Academy Awards released its 2016 nominees Thursday morning with a familiar look — only white actors were nominated in the acting categories.

The Academy skipped over actors of color such as Benicio Del Toro for "Sicario," Idris Elba for "Beasts of No Nation," and Tessa Thompson for "Creed."

No actors of color were nominated for awards at the Oscars this year, prompting a social media backlash. Above, the actors nominated for Best Actor: Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon, Eddie Redmayne, Bryan Cranston, and Michael Fassbender.

#OscarsSoWhite reemerged on social media following the Academy's nominees announcement. The hashtag was created by lawyer April Reign last year following the same scarcity of actors of color on the list.

Reign tweeted Thursday morning: "A five minute opening by brilliant Chris Rock will not make up for over 80 years of erasure of marginalized communities. #OscarsSoWhite"

"Straight Outta Compton" broke box office records this past summer with a $56.1 million debut weekend. Although it had the biggest ever August debut for an R-rated movie, that was not enough to land its actors on the Academy's list.

While the Oscars have celebrated the best of Hollywood for the past eight decades, Twitter user @ubeempress noted only "2 Asians, 1 Latino, & 4 black men have won Best Actor." Comedian Hari Kondabolu pointed out that Rocky (Sylvester Stallone) in "Creed" got nominated in a film about the black character's son.

It wasn't just filmgoers and writers who had a negative reaction. California Congressman Tony Cardenas tweeted that "all of America deserves to see themselves in film."
