Seth Meyers bets one of his writers that he can explain the problems in Ukraine before he can untangle a pair of earbud headphones. Watch what happens. (Published Wednesday, Mar 12, 2014)

Seth Meyers returned to his "Weekend Update" roots on "Late Night" by talking about news, giving viewers a rapidfire summary of all the events that led to the crisis in Ukraine.

Meyers called on Ben Warheit, one of his writers, to help him out with the segment.

"Here's what's going to happen," Meyers said. "I'm going to explain what's happening in Ukraine faster than Ben here can untangle these headphones."

"But Seth, I'm going to defeat you," Ben said.

"Okay, well we'll see Ben. I appreciate your enthusiasm for this," Meyers said.

Meyers then launched his lightning fast explanation, hitting points like: President Viktor Yanukovych's rejection of an agreement with the European Union in favor of a closer relationship to Moscow, the bloody protests in Kiev's Independence Square, and the subsequent establishment of a new government in the embattled country.

Meyers also talked about Putin's move to increase the Russian troop presence in the Crimean peninsula.

"Crimeans aren't upset because 60 percent of them are still ethnically Russian," Meyers said. "So basically it's not Russia but it's right next door and it's full of Russians. The closest thing we have to that in America is Cancun in March."

Meyers finished his explanation and pointed to Ben who had not yet finished untangling the headphones.

"I'm really sorry Ben," Meyers said.

"I went slow cause I thought you'd be mad if I won," Ben said.

"What would make you say that?"

    "You said you'd fire me."
