Most. Dramatic. Bachelorette. Finale. Ever.
Desiree Hartsock and viewers were left with their jaws on the floor last week when Brooks Forester, the man Des revealed she was in love with, bowed out of the ABC reality series, admitting he couldn't see a future with her.
"I just want to go home, to be honest," a teary-eyed Des said at the beginning of the finale on Monday night. Alas, the Bachelorette decided to soldier on and hold a rose ceremony with the two remaining men: Drew Kenney and Chris Siegfried. So who did Desiree choose to give her heart to in the end? Or was she the first Bachelorette in history to leave the series alone?
Desiree is engaged to Chris, y'all! Yes, our Bachelorette landed herself a happy ending after all, but it wasn't a smooth ride to her there.
But before she chose Chris, there was still two hours of buildup, including Desiree telling the guys about Brooks breaking her heart. "It turned my world upside down," she admitted. "I don't want Brooks leaving to affect my relationship with you guys and I won't let yesterday break my spirit." She then offered them each roses as a test of their commitment to her and their relationship. "Please, if you don't want to, just let me know," she said while holding back tears. Of course, both Chris and Drew accept the roses, with Drew saying, "I'll never leave Desiree."
Too bad Des knew very early on that she wasn't in love with him. "I wanted to feel the excitement I feel when I'm in love with someone," she admitted while on their romantic date. "I don't know if I can see our futures together," Des finally told Drew. "I feel like there's something missing." Drew, of course, is shocked, but said, "You don't have to be sorry for now being in love with me."
So 45 minutes into the two-hour finale and Chris was the last man standing. "Going into my date with Chris, having to say goodbye would be miserable," Des said, but noted that seeing her suitor walk up "felt different from Drew in a good way."
Desiree soon admitted she felt guilty that she didn't love Chris from the very beginning. "I've never felt like anyone has loved me as much as I love them," Des said, "so it feels good" to know how much Chris, who she called "the greatest man I've ever known," loves her.
Des felt so confident about her future with Chris that she decided to introduce him to her parents and her brother Nate, you know, the one who got in that famous fight with Bachelor Sean Lowe. After a grilling session, Nate approved of Chris. Phew! But he did question whether or not his sister is really over Brooks.
"Chris is the man I could love my entire life, but at the same time, Chris doesn't know how I felt about Brooks," Des said and worried that Chris will change his mind about proposing to her once he learns the truth.
Before Chris got down on one knee, Des stopped him to tell him everything: Sending Drew home early and that she was in love with Brooks, but she now realizes Chris exactly what she needs. "I love you, I love you so much," she said. "I want to spend the rest of my life with you."
Des' confession doesn't deter Chris' intention to propose as he soon gets down on one knee to ask for her hand in marriage, wanting to be her "first and last."
