Most of the time, when a fan falls out of love with a particular band, they'll simply delete their mp3's, toss out the collected cd's and tear the posters from their bedroom wall.

But a disaffected former Weezer fan is taking a novel step: he wants to collect $10 million so that he can pay the band to break up.

James Burns stated his intention to solicit donations on a blog called thepoint.com, reports the New York Daily News.

"I'm tired of my friends being disappointed year after year," he wrote. "I'm tired of endless whimsical cutesy album covers and music videos."

The Seattle resident called the relationship between the band and its fans "abusive" and contested that Weezer has not released a good album since 1996's "Pinkerton," the follow up to 1994's acclaimed "Blue Album."

"I beg you Weezer, take our money and disappear," Burns wrote.

The band's drummer, Patrick Wilson, shot back with a tongue in cheek remark over Twitter.

"If they can make it to 20, we'll do the 'deluxe breakup!" he wrote.

Lead singer Rivers Cuomo was less magnanimous after reading about the project on indie music review site Pitchfork.

"They must get a lot of hits when they write crap about us," he tweeted.

The band's new album, "Death to False Metal," comes out November 2.
