“Late Night With Jimmy Fallon” viewers were treated to the first ever live performance of the “SNL” hit “Lazy Sunday” on Monday’s program, as Andy Samberg and Chris Parnell reunited to riff again on snack foods, Google maps and “The Chronicles of Narnia.”
Akiva Schaffer, Jorma Taccone and other members of Samberg’s comedy troupe, Lonely Island, helped act out scenes from the original music video, which parodies stoner culture. Fallon’s house band, The Roots, provided old school hip-hop beats and soul grooves for the “SNL” veterans.
“Boy oh boy....one for the historybooks. my job keeps getting better and better,” ?uestlove of The Roots tweeted before the show on Monday.
“Lazy Sunday” first aired on Dec. 17, 2005 but shot to fame on a then little-known site called YouTube. NBC eventually pulled the clip from YouTube and the digital short now lives on Hulu.
On the heels of “Sunday’s” success, Lonely Island went on to produce the Grammy-winning “D*** in a Box” and other digital shorts for “SNL.”
