Is this the year of the Connected Home?
Actually, let’s back up for a second and start by asking: What is a "Connected Home," anyway?
The Connected Home is a setup in which home appliances and accessories connect to the Internet via your home Wi-Fi system, allowing homeowners to control them. Lights, temperature, home entertainment and home security systems, smoke alarms and audio-video monitoring systems that can let you see and hear what’s going on in your home—and in some cases even talk to the people still inside. Imagine telling your dog to get off the couch while you’re miles away!
It’s not just something for the future; you can have it today. In other words, you can keep an eye on what matters to you from anywhere, and control what you want to control, via your smartphone, tablet, or computer! Control, convenience, and efficiency, all in the palm of your hand.
But the advantages of the Connected Home extend beyond convenience. Consider safety and security. Today, you can easily set up a security system to alert you via text or email about intrusion, glass breakage, motion detection, and more. And you can do it without monthly monitoring fees. You can even get real-time and recorded video monitoring in 1080P high definition— plus night vision to see everything going on, no matter what time or how dark it is. It’s a smart security system!
In fact, home automation can make almost everything in your home smarter. Take the humble smoker detector. Ordinary smoke detectors make a loud noise when they sense smoke or heat. That’s terrific if you’re home at the time, so you can be warned and get out. But what if you’re already out, and miles away? For around $100, you can get a connected smoke and carbon monoxide detector that sends alerts to your smartphone or tablet. It’s so sensitive it can tell the difference between a slow and fast-burning fire. It will even tell you what’s wrong, and where the problem is—protecting your home when you’re away, and you when you’re at home. Test and reset it automatically from wherever you are. Now that’s a new generation smoke detector!
Or imagine leaving your house and forgetting to change the thermostat. That used to be a real annoyance. You either turn around and go back or leave the thermostat set where it was, no matter what it might cost you on your bill. But now, you can have a system to view and change settings on your entire HVAC system from a PC, smart phone, or tablet remotely! Make it warmer, or cooler, even access multiple thermostats if your system is zoned. You’ll get a text or email if the temperature is warmer or cooler or the humidity is higher than you’ve specified. Which all leads to you arriving home to the exact temperature you want, even though while you were away the thermostat was set to save you money. Smart thermostats can save you up to 30 percent on your electric bill.
Want more? There are systems that work together, tying more and more of your home accessories into one connected bundle.
Companies like Swann with their Swann One system that can detect intruders, breakage, set and control temperature, show you everything going on and let you communicate with two-way audio. Just do the easy set-up to your home Wi-Fi, download the app, and get started!
Or the ‘‘Nest’’ system. The ‘‘Nest’’ thermostat is well known for being intuitive. It picks up on your habits and begins to mimic them—like when you raise or lower the heat or cooling. ‘‘Nest’ also makes a connected camera that allows you to listen and talk, and a quality connected smoke detector, too. Nest products work well, and look good, too. But the real fun is all the products that work with ‘‘Nest’’ technology with more products being added all the time. All from one system and one Nest app.
It won’t be long until sensors really do detect if you’re out of eggs or running low on milk, and remind you while you’re at the store.
