2 Dead in Apparent Murder-Suicide at Margate Condo Building: Cops

Officials said a man in his 60s shot and killed a woman in her 80s before pulling the trigger on himself.

Two people are dead after an apparent murder-suicide at a Margate condo building, officials said.

Robert Halik, 58, shot and killed his mother Jindra Halik, 88, in their Palm Springs condominium at 1700 NW 80th Ave. before pulling the trigger on himself, according to Margate Police.

Authorities say that prior to the incident, Robert Halik called police, told them there would be a murder suicide and hung up.

When officials arrived on scene, they saw him exit his apartment and go back inside, police said. He closed his doors when police tried to make contact with him, and further attempts to communicate with him were unsuccessful, according to authorities.

Shortly afterwards, police heard what they believed to be two gunshots. SWAT and crisis negotiators arrived on scene and forced entry into the residence where Robert Halik and his mother were found dead from apparent gunshot wounds, police said.

Neighbors say the Palm Springs condos, which are residences for those 55 and older, never see this much police activity.

"We went inside, and all of a sudden we hear a big boom," neighbor Curtis Cox said.
