204 Arrested In Drugs, Prostitution Sweep

Even the USPS was in on the massive, multi-agency operation

Is anyone left on the streets of Broward County?

A whopping 204 arrests were made Friday and early Saturday in a massive crackdown on drug, prostitution, and other crimes by a multi-agency operation that included the Broward Sheriff's Office, DEA, FBI, ATF, and six local police departments.

The sweep was aimed at narcotics sales, prostitution, fugitive warrants, and the mailing of illegal items, meaning even the United States Postal Service was in on the action.

A concurrent Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force operation was aimed at rounding up sexual predators.

"It puts a dent in what's going on around the county," said BSO Capt. James Fondo. "Ultimately, we're trying to send a message that all the agencies in Broward County work together and we're trying to clean the streets."

The accused were brought in large groups to a command post at the Ron Cochran Public Safety Complex in Fort Lauderdale, where they were interviewed and some gave DNA samples.

"We debrief them for any knowldge they may have about of crimes that have been committed in the past," said Fondo. "When you take 200 people who primarily are in the criminal world, they usually have information on other things that are occurring, and it gives us good information to go forward on cases.

In addition to multple felonies, the sweep also led to the confiscation of illegal weapons, drugs and cash.
