SCOTT SEEKS SUPREME COURT REVIEW OF WORKER DRUG TEST
Florida Gov. Rick Scott plans to seek U.S. Supreme Court review of his executive order requiring random drug tests for thousands of state employees. Attorneys for the Republican governor are asking a Miami federal judge to delay proceedings in a lawsuit challenging the tests until the Supreme Court decides whether to hear the appeal. U.S. District Judge Ursula Ungaro has set a Thursday hearing in the case.
OPENING STATEMENTS IN MATHIS TRIAL
A jury has been selected in the trial of a Jacksonville attorney accused of being the mastermind behind a veteran's charity that prosecutors say actually was a $290 million gambling operation. Opening statements are set Thursday morning in Kelly Mathis' trial on money laundering and other charges.
CROP RESEARCH CENTER TO CLOSE
The University of Florida will close a vegetable and citrus crop research center in Immokalee and transfer its seven faculty members to research centers in Lake Alfred and Fort Pierce. The Southwest Florida Research and Education Center's building will not close, but will be put to other uses, possibly a demonstration site that is similar to facilities in Live Oak and Hastings.
WIND TURBINE TRAINING IN ORLANDO
A new state-of-the-art wind turbine training center is opening in Orlando. Gov. Rick Scott and Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer are attending Thursday's opening of the facility operated by Siemens' Energy. The 40,000-square-foot facility has two 32-foot turbine towers that workers will use to practice safety and rescue operations.
CENSUS: INCOME IS STAGNANT IN FLORIDA
Figures released by the U.S. Census Bureau show household income in Florida continues to stagnate almost five years from the depth of recession. The Census figures released Thursday also show that Florida's largest metro areas - South Florida, Tampa and Orlando - rank at the bottom in income levels for the nation's most populous cities.
