US BRACING FOR GOVERNMENT SHUTDOWN
The United States is bracing for a partial government shutdown as President Obama and the Democratic-controlled Senate remain at loggerheads with the Republican-run House over a plan to fund the government. GOP leaders want to tie government funding to a year-long delay of key parts of Obama's health care law. If the midnight Monday deadline passes without a deal, a shutdown would affect a wide range of services, from national parks to the Pentagon.
TRIAL STARTING IN '01 SLAYING OF FLORIDA BUSINESSMAN
Trial is finally starting for two men accused of murder in the 2001 mob-style slaying of a South Florida businessman who founded Miami Subs and ran a casino cruise fleet. Opening statements are set Monday in the case against Anthony "Big Tony" Moscatiello and Anthony "Little Tony" Ferrari. They are accused of orchestrating a hit against Konstantinos "Gus" Boulis amidst a power struggle over SunCruz Casinos. Boulis was fatally shot in his car on a Fort Lauderdale street.
HEAT SIGNS SPOELSTRA TO MULTIYEAR EXTENSION
Erik Spoelstra has been with the Miami Heat for nearly two decades, and their relationship won't be ending anytime soon. Spoelstra has signed a multiyear extension to remain as coach of the two-time defending NBA champion Heat, the team said Sunday afternoon. Spoelstra is 260-134 in his first five seasons with Miami, going to the playoffs in each of those years, the NBA finals in each of the last three and winning the title in 2012 and 2013.
MACELLA HAZAN, FAMED COOKBOOK AUTHOR, DIES AT 89
Marcella Hazan, the Italian-born cookbook author who taught generations of Americans how to create simple, fresh Italian food, died at her Florida home Sunday. She was 89. Hazan was best known for her six cookbooks, which were written by her in Italian and translated into English by Victor, her husband of 57 years. The recipes were traditional, tasty and sparse. It was Hazan's 1973 cookbook, "The Classic Italian Cookbook," that led gourmands to draw comparisons between Hazan and another larger-than-life cookbook author: Julia Child.

BOAT WITH DRUGS FOUND WASHED ASHORE IN FORT LAUDERDALE
Fort Lauderdale Police are investigating after a boat containing drugs washed ashore early Monday. The 20-foot boat was discovered around 6 a.m. just south of Oakland Park Boulevard. No arrests were made, police said.
