A homeless man may have gotten more than he bargained for when he tried to steal a bicycle and instead got the beating of a lifetime, Fort Lauderdale Police said.

Keith Kirk, 30, was left bruised and battered after he tried to take the bicycle from the One Stop Food Mart at 18 Northwest 1st Avenue Wednesday afternoon, according to a Fort Lauderdale arrest report obtained Friday.

According to the report, Kirk was spotted taking the bike, which is worth over $600, without permission or consent from the owner, Calvin McDougal.

McDougal pursued Kirk and tackled him, leading to a physical altercation in which McDougal struck Kirk in the face, the report said.

A mugshot showed the full extent of the pounding McDougal gave Kirk, with two black eyes, one swollen shut, stitches and a cut above one eye.

Kirk was taken to Broward General Hospital for treatment and later charged with one count of grand larceny. It was unknown whether he has an attorney.
