Body Found in Lauderhill Canal

Police are investigating after a body was found in a Lauderhill canal Wednesday morning.

The body was discovered in the canal in the area of North University Drive and Northwest 50th Street, Lauderhill Police said.

Investigators and a dive team responded around 7:40 a.m. and found the person floating face down in the water.

The victim hasn't been identified and police said they're still trying to determine how the person died.

"We cannot determine whether it’s male, female or black or white. We’re not going to be able to make any kind of identification on the body until it is removed and there is a proper examination done," Lauderhill Police spokesman Lt. Mike Butkus said.

Neighbors said they were stunned to hear the news.

"It's frightening that this has occurred here," resident Elizabeth Gonzalez said. "It’s very sad and very tragic that a human being has been perhaps been killed or not, we don’t know what happened yet.

Police are asking anyone with information to call Broward Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS.
