A woman was hospitalized after her SUV drove off I-95 and flipped over onto a street below in Miami Thursday.

The Ford Explorer drove off the highway guard rail and fell about 15 feet at Northwest 17th Street and 5th Avenue around 7 a.m.

"When we arrived, we found a Ford Explorer upside-down, on the side, right here off of 17th Street between 5th and 7th Avenue," Miami Fire Rescue spokesman Lt. Ignatius Carroll said.

The driver was taken to Ryder Trauma Center where she was treated for facial trauma, Carroll said.

Another woman, who said she saw the whole harrowing crash unfold, said she pulled over, called for help and told authorities what she saw.

"She said the driver was trying to avoid a box that was on the highway on northbound I-95, just after you pass the 836 on ramp," Carroll said.

Carroll said the woman was dazed but lucky.

"She was very lucky that it just missed striking her, and where it actually struck the vehicle, kept it from actually causing serious injury to her," he said.
