Pets in costume took to the catwalk Wednesday night in Key West for the annual Pet Masquerade at Fantasy Fest.

Cats and dogs dressed in superhero garb to match this year's Fantasy Fest theme "Super Heroes, Villains... & Beyond."

There were nearly 60 entries of dressed-up dogs and cats for the competition that drew about 1,000 visitors. Some even performed skits with their matching human counterparts.

Among this year's cutest: a couple of Jack Russell terriers as Superman and a villain, a "vampire cat" with a replica coffin, and two small dogs costumes as endurance swimmer Diana Nyad being "menaced" by humans dressed as jellyfish.

The overall winner was a multi-person animal and human ensemble that performed to Michael Jackson's "Thriller." The group is spearheaded by a local group of veterinarians that benefits the Lower Keys Friends of Animals.

"They have competed for many years," said Carol Shaughnessy with the Florida Keys News Bureau. "This year they were a thrilling 'Thriller.'"

Nyad, who became the first person to swim from Cuba to the Florida Keys without a shark cage, will lead the Fantasy Fest parade Saturday night as grand marshal. The procession will go down Duval Street starting at 7 p.m.
