Dolphins Re-Sign Safety Alexander

Miami goes to the scrap heap for help in the defensive secondary

Gerald Alexander is back on the Dolphins merry-go-round. The Miami Dolphins signed the safety for the second time this season on Wednesday after placing WR Roberto Wallace on injured reserve.

The Dolphins first signed Alexander on August 29, but he was cut September 3 as the team trimmed its roster in preparation for the regular season.

The Dolphins are Alexander's fourth team. He was drafted by the Detroit Lions in 2007 out of Boise State, and has spent time with the Jacksonville Jaguars and Carolina Panthers.

The Sun Sentinel reported Wednesday that safety Chris Clemons re-aggravated a hamstring injury in practice last week. Clemons had been starting at free safety for the Dolphins coming into the season, but his hamstring troubles have kept him out of the starting lineup in favor of Reshad Jones.

Miami's pass defense is currently ranked 29th in terms of yardage, and the defense has only managed 2 interceptions in the first five games of the season.

Alexander only has 4 interceptions in 41 career games, but that 0.1 interception-per-game average is better than those of fellow safeties Clemons, Yeremiah Bell and Reshad Jones.

But this is not a move to solidify the defense. Instead, it is a roster-filling move to make up for an injury to Clemons which could keep him out of action for an extended period.
