Fatal crash Monday morning after car collided with tractor-trailer: Police

Authorities were investigating a fatal crash involving an 18-wheeler and a car in Coral Springs early Monday.

The crash happened around 4 a.m. in the area of State Road 7 and Turtle Creek Road.

Coral Springs Police spokesman Lt. Joe McHugh said the driver of a 4-door red Lexus rammed into the tractor-trailer and then went airborne into some bushes.

According to McHugh, the driver of the truck heard a thud but looked behind him and didn't see anything. When he got to his destination he realized there was damage to the truck and returned to the scene about a half hour after the crash.

"The red vehicle, the Lexus, ended up striking the rear of the tractor-trailer, which was the thud that the driver actually heard, causing the vehicle to go off the roadway and hit a tree," McHugh said.

The driver of the Lexus was killed at the scene and the truck driver wasn't injured and is cooperating with police, McHugh said. The victim's identity wasn't released.

"There is severe damage done to the Lexus, it actually peeled part of the roof back on the Lexus, it was a very severe impact," McHugh said. "Unfortunately, the 29-year-old male driver did lose his life in the accident."

Southbound traffic on State Road 7 was backed up early Monday as police investigated the incident. Portions of nearby Wiles Road and Sample Road were also shut down due to the crash.
