Family With 5 Children Rescued Off Nassau Sound

Officials rescued two adults and five children between 2- and 15-years-old.

A family with five children has been rescued after their boat became disabled off Nassau Sound.

The Florida Times-Union reports the family's boat was drifting toward shore and its anchor would not hold Saturday afternoon.

A helicopter was dispatched to make an aerial rescue, but weather conditions and the boat's rigging made it unsafe.

A Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission boat reached James Lee of Darian, Ga., his five children and brother-in-law at about 8:30 p.m.

Four children between the ages of 2 and 14 were rescued from the boat and the two adults and a 15-year-old boy were then pulled out by a Coast Guard helicopter.

The family was reunited at Coast Guard Sector Jacksonville in Atlantic Beach.
