A Fort Lauderdale family and their dog were able to escape without injuries after a fire ripped through their home Wednesday morning, officials said.

The blaze began around 2:30 a.m. at the home in the 2400 block of Sunrise Key Boulevard, Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue spokesman Matt Little said.

A couple and their son heard an explosion and fire alarm and were able to safely evacuate and call 911, Little said. The family's dog refused to leave and had to be rescued by firefighters, who quickly responded.

When the firefighters arrived at the home, flames were shooting through the roof of the garage.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, Little said.
