Firefighters respond to a fire at a house in the 5100 block of Southwest 6th Street in Flagami. Officials said a man had to be pulled from the home.

"I was scared," said Alex Quintana, who lives two doors down. He says he woke up to what sounded like an explosion or gunshot as the house burned.

Investigators say the approximately 40-year-old victim suffered cuts and burns, but is recovering at Jackson Memorial Hospital. He wasn't identified.

Quintana said the victim lives alone and mostly keeps to himself.

Firefighters were able to douse the flames but the house was badly damaged. Authorities didn't say what caused the fire.
