Floridians Can Vote on New License Plate Design

Four new license plate designs up for vote for Florida drivers

Florida drivers are getting a say on the next license plate that could soon be featured on their cars.

The Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles launched a website Monday where Floridians can vote on one of four new plate designs.

Drivers can pick their plate at vote4floridatag.com now through Dec. 14, and the winner could determine which plate is picked, department spokeswoman Kirsten Olsen-Doolan said.

"We just want people to weigh in on which one is their favorite," she said.

Florida License Plates May Be Redesigned

The four new designs all feature an orange and the state's nickname as well as seven characters in a new font that increase the plate's readability. The new plates also remove the orange and outline of the state from the center.

Current plates have only six characters, and the six character combinations are running out, Olsen-Doolan said.

State agency personnel, law enforcement, tax collectors and affiliated associations participated in the final license plate designs, Olsen-Doolan said.

She said many drivers are expected to renew their plates in 2014 and that the new plates won't cost more than the current ones.
