Haitian Dance Troupe Ayikodans Returns to Miami

Almost four years after an earthquake destroyed its studio in Haiti's capital, the modern dance company Ayikodans is debuting fresh work.

South Florida's Haitian-American community and the Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County extended a financial lifeline and fundraising help to the struggling troupe after the 2010 quake. The funding has helped Ayikodans build a new studio in the hills above Port-au-Prince, Haiti.

This weekend in Miami, the company led by artistic director Jeanguy Saintus will present the first choreography created in that new studio. The piece is called "Tribulations."

Arsht Center President and CEO John Richard says Ayikodans "brings to Miami a real-life story of physical and spiritual renewal."

Saintus founded Ayikodans in 1987. His choreography blends religious and folk dances with contemporary movements.
