Hollywood Police Giving Officers Overtime to Fill Gaps

OT given to officers until department can fill 20 vacant positions

The Hollywood Police Department will offer officers overtime to help fill in the gaps until they can fill some 20 vacant positions.

City officials say it's an "immediate fix" for the department. Some residents told city leaders during a recent community meeting that they don't feel safe in their homes.

The Miami Herald reports the department had 24 officers retire during the fiscal year, which ends Sunday. Eight others have resigned.

Assistant City Manager Frank Fernandez says the problem is it takes about a year from the time officers apply until they can be on the street. For example, 14 officers have been recently hired. Four are in the police academy and 10 are training with Hollywood officers.

The Herald reports a starting officer in Hollywood makes about $42,000.
