Knicks' J.R. Smith Arrested on Warrant in Miami Beach

Warrant was for no valid driver's license

New York Knicks Guard J.R. Smith was arrested in Miami Beach Thursday night on a warrant for no valid driver's license, jail records showed.

The 26-year-old, whose real name is Earl Joseph Smith, was arrested after he was spotted inside a store in the 1600 block of Washington Avenue around 8:30 p.m., according to a Miami Beach Police report.

When officers ran his license, they discovered the warrant, Miami Beach Police spokesman Sgt. Bobby Hernandez said. The warrant dates back to last July, according to the report.

Smith was booked into jail just before midnight, records showed. He later bonded out.

According to Smith's official Twitter account, he tweeted Thursday night he was in Miami Beach.

"Love the #FountainBleau must stay every time!" he wrote.

Smith was drafted by the New Orleans Hornets in the first round of the 2004 NBA Draft. He was later traded to the Denver Nuggets, where he spent five seasons.

He played in China during the NBA lockout earlier this year before signing with the Knicks.
