The victim's wife, Janicia Melton, said she was inside the apartment they share when her 23-year-old husband, Xavier, began banging on the door.

"I was in the bathroom and I heard a big boom on the door and it was him and he just started screaming 'call 911,'" Melton said. "When I came out I just see him on the floor in a puddle of blood."

Melton said her husband told her he had been standing outside when someone started shooting at him. She said he was shot once in the chest.

The man was rushed to Broward General, where his condition was unknown. Melton said he was undergoing surgery.

Officers were at the scene early Wednesday gathering evidence. Officials said they have no motive for the shooting and they don't know whether it was a random shooting or the man was targeted.

The gunman is still at large.
