Man Acting Bizarrely Dies During Arrest: BSO

Deputies saw man smoke something, put something in mouth before he died

A man who was stabbing a Pompano Beach gas station window died in police custody after deputies saw him smoke something and put something in his mouth, authorities said Tuesday.

Deputies responded to the BP Gas Station at 250 East Sample Road just before 3:30 a.m. Monday after receiving a 911 call of a man acting bizarrely and stabbing the front window with a knife, the Broward Sheriff's Office said.

When they arrived, they spotted 41-year-old Kenneth Lent getting into his truck. The deputies ordered him to exit but before he did, the deputies saw him smoke something out of a glass pipe, the BSO said.

He also put something in his mouth and drank from a Gatorade bottle before he got out and was handcuffed by the deputies.

On the way to the patrol car, Lent had trouble walking and was brought to the ground where the deputies began to perform CPR and called Pompano Beach Fire Rescue.

Lent was taken to Broward Health North where he was later pronounced dead. Detectives later found several small knives and a small amount of cocaine in Lent's truck.

The Broward County Medical Examiner will determine Lent's cause of death, the BSO said.
