Man Arrested in Hit and Run That Killed Teen Cyclist

Man charged in crash that killed teen cyclist in Oakland Park

The man sought in the fatal hit and run of a teen cyclist in Oakland Park has been arrested, authorities said Wednesday.

Christopher Thompson, 37, was arrested Tuesday on charges of failing to stop at an accident involving death, tampering with physical evidence and driving with a suspended license, according to the Broward Sheriff's office.

On Monday, Thompson was named a person of interest in the June 14 crash that killed 17-year-old Gabriel Amaya. Amaya was riding his bike in the crosswalk over the southbound lanes of Powerline road at Prospect Road when an SUV struck his front tire, the BSO said.

Amaya was thrown off his bicycle and into the roadway. He was taken by Oakland Park Fire Rescue to Broward Health Medical Center where he was later pronounced dead.

After the BSO named Thompson a person of interest, Broward CrimeStoppers received numerous calls about his possible location, the BSO said. He was taken into custody after he was spotted in his girlfriend's car in the 700 block of Commercial Boulevard without incident.

Additional tips led authorities to Thompson's car, a black 1995 Chevy Tahoe which was found in a tow yard in Port St. Lucie, the BSO said. Authorities said repairs had been made to the vehicle.

Thompson was being held on over $9,000 bond. It was unknown whether he has an attorney.
