Man Drowns Near Bridge to Key Biscayne

Witnesses said drowning victim appeared to be intoxicated when he went swimming Friday night

A man drowned Friday night near the William Powell Bridge to Key Biscayne, Miami Fire Rescue spokesman Ignatius Carroll, Jr. said.

"He was supposedly going to take a swim," said Carroll.

Witnesses told investigators that the man, who appeared to be in his mid-30s, seemed to be intoxicated when he entered the water.

Carroll said it took first responders about 35 minutes to locate the man in the water, and that he was unconscious when they reached him.

The victim was transported to Jackson Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
