Miami-Dade Police say a man crashed into several cars and a police memorial before he punched an officer and was finally shot with a stun gun and taken into custody in Tropical Park early Friday.
Sadiel Ramon Martinez, 28, was arrested just before 2 a.m. at the park at 7900 Southwest 40th Street, according to a Miami-Dade Police arrest report.
The report said Martinez was "involved in several hit and run crashes inside Tropical Park" before he plowed through the gate of the Police Officers Assistance Trust Law Enforcement Memorial in his red Hyundai.
When an officer tried to approach him, Martinez punched him in the nose, the report said.
It took a shot from a stun gun to get Martinez on the ground and into custody, the report said.
Martinez was taken to Kendall Regional Medical Center for treatment and later taken into police custody.
He faces charges of battery on a law enforcement officer and resisting arrest with violence. It was unknown whether he has an attorney.
Detectives are still trying to determine whether he was impaired, police said.
The police memorial was erected in the park in 1980 to honor fallen officers from Miami-Dade.
"These are hallowed grounds for us. We've got officers' names on the walls behind us," said Capt. Juan Perez.
Lt. Angus Butler said he was shocked that this happened.
"I was shocked, disappointed, especially since this is the holiday season," Butler said.
