Man Jumps to Death in Canal in Attempt to Escape Police in North Miami Beach

The man jumped into a canal to escape police, but he was still in handcuffs.

Police said a man that was arrested and placed in handcuffs ran across a busy intersection and jumped to his death in a nearby canal in North Miami Beach.

Although it is still unclear why, Sunny Isles Beach Police stopped the man during a traffic stop at about 5:30 p.m. Saturday.

The man was then handcuffed behind Brazilian steakhouse Area Code 55 at 16375 Biscayne Blvd.

That's when he made a run for it across busy Biscayne Boulevard, according to police. The man then jumped off a bridge, diving into a canal in an attempt to swim away, but he was still handcuffed.

"Officers attempted to assist him and dove in behind him," said Miami-Dade Police Det. Elena Hernandez.

Fire rescue crews also assisted officers in pulling the man out of the water, but he was later pronounced dead at an area hospital.

The man's identity has not yet been released. Police did not provide further details.
