Man Says Teen Brother's Fatal Shooting an Accident: Cops

Felix Phelps told police he thought the gun's safety was on when it discharged

A man who fatally shot his teenaged brother in Fort Lauderdale Saturday night has told authorities it was an accident, said Det. Travis Mandell of the Fort Lauderdale Police Department.

Felix Phelps, 27, called police about 11:45 p.m. from the Texico gas station on Southeast 17th Street where he worked, reporting he had accidentally shot his brother Flexion Phelps, 17.

Felix Phelps told detectives that his brother was at the gas station helping him with closing duties, and that he thought the gun's safety was on when it suddenly discharged, striking his brother in the head.

Responding emergency personnel transported the younger Phelps to Broward General Medical Center, where he later died.

No charges have been filed, but Mandell says the investigation into the shooting is still ongoing. Anyone with information is urged to call Broward County Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS.
