A Pembroke Park man is charged with cruelty to animals

A  Pembroke Park man was arrested for throwing his niece's dog against a wall, according to police.

The defendant Alejandro Merlo was charged with cruelty to animals and is being held at the Broward County jail. His bond was set at $2,500.

Veronica Jimenez was staying at her uncle's residence on Oct. 25 when she arrived home and heard him yelling, the arrest report said.  She entered her bedroom, saw him holding her dog, and then saw her uncle swing the dog against her bedroom wall, authorities said.

Jimenez immediately gathered her belongings and left the residence, the arrest report said.

She took her dog to a veterinarian and it was diagnosed with a broken right leg, authorities said.

Merlo is also awaiting trial for two charges of probation violation. It wasn't immediately known if he had an attorney.
