Miami Beach Commissioners Say No to Casinos

Miami Beach officials said they do not want their city to look like Las Vegas or Atlantic City

Miami Beach commissioners voted against bringing destination casinos to the city Wednesday night, saying they don't want their city to look like Las Vegas or Atlantic City.

Mayor Matti Herrera Bower said she felt like she, and the city, won with their unanimous vote at Wednesday night's meeting.

"I knew it was coming that way," Bower said. "I know my fellow commissioners and I know that we want the best for the beach."

A group of protestors who gathered outside the commission meeting agreed with the unanimous vote.

The city hasn't won yet. That's because the final vote has to come from state legislators.

As for the mayor, she doesn't think she's heard the end of it. She expects the same issue to be brought up again in a year or two, but thinks commissioners will vote the same then.
