Miami Police Search for Man Accused of Sexually Assaulting, Robbing Teen in Abandoned Home

Miami Police say a teen was robbed and sexually assaulted as she was walking home Sunday. Officials are now searching for the suspect.

Miami Police handed out flyers Thursday in hopes that someone would recognize the sketch of a man suspected of robbing and sexually assaulting a girl as she walked home from her bus stop Sunday morning.

Officials said the man brazenly approached the teenager near the area of NW 46th Street and 5th Avenue. Then in broad daylight, he pointed a gun at her, forcing her into an abandoned home.

Once inside, the man sexually assaulted her for nearly two hours, officials said.

"You don't think that the person who's going to talk to you on a Sunday morning is there to rob you, needless to say rape you," said Officer Kenia Reyes with Miami-Dade Police Department.

Police already questioned one man who neighbors said bore a striking resemblance to the suspect, but let him go after taking a DNA swab.

Neighbors were sickened by the news.

"It's sad that the kids can't have fun anymore," neighbor Mary Allen said. "You can't even just go outside to play in your yard."

The mother of a 15-year-old girl who lives next door to the dilapidated home said she can't believe her daughter was home alone, just feet away from the crime.

"It's so close and that day my daughter was here, and my husband and I left for two hours, and she was here alone," said the woman who wanted to remain anonymous.

Neighbors say the abandoned house has been empty for over a decade. Signs plastered on the front of the home deem it unsafe. Still, a lock to one of the doors had been busted, and an old wooden door hung open.

"Looks like they find a way to break in," said a neighbor named Dolores, whose parents have owned a home across the street for five decades.

Some neighbors said transients sleep inside the house at night.

Authorities say he didn't just take advantage of the frightened girl, he robbed her of everything she was carrying.

The teen girl was able to run after the attack to her home, where she called police.

"Hopefully they catch this guy soon," neighbor Vanessa Valdez said.
