Miami Restaurant Owner Dies Trying to Fix Septic Tank

Restaurant owner faints after he's overwhelmed by toxic fumes

A Miami restaurant owner died Sunday after he inhaled toxic fumes while trying to fix a septic tank.

Tomas Gil, the owner of Esther's at 777 Northwest 103rd Street became overwhelmed by the fumes and fainted inside the tank.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue spokeswoman Grisele Marino said another man tried to help Gil, but he became dizzy himself.

Rescue crews arrived and rushed Gil to the hospital, where he later died. Marino said the death is under investigation.

Gil's sister, Martha Spillers, said Gil had been trying to fix the tank on Saturday with a cousin, but attempted to do it on his own on Sunday.
