Newtown Shooting Observances in Miami-Dade and Broward Tuesday

South Florida schools holding moment of silence for Conn. shooting victims

School administrators in Miami-Dade and Broward will be holding observances Tuesday morning for the victims in the Connecticut school shooting.

In Miami-Dade, an observance will take place at the School Board Administration building where they'll hold a moment of silence at 9:40 a.m., when Friday's shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown took place.

School Board Chair Perla Tabares Hantman, board members and Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Gimenez are scheduled to attend.

On Monday, students observed a moment of silence at all district schools, where flags flew at half-mast. All Broward schools and administrative offices will observe a moment of silence on Tuesday and flags will fly at half-staff throughout the week.

Friday's mass shooting claimed the lives of 26 people including 20 young children.

As students returned to classes in Miami-Dade Monday, Superintendent of Schools Alberto Carvalho discussed the district's security procedures.

“Our protocols are solid. We conduct routine evacuation drills and lockdown drills,” Carvalho said.

Carvalho also sent a message to the thousands of parents who are now paying much more attention to the security of their kids.

“We went into the weekend with a great deal of conversation with our cabinet, particularly around security and safety preparedness and response,” he said.

Broward Superintendent of Schools Robert Runcie also reassured parents in a letter sent out Monday, saying there would be increased law enforcement presence this week.

"District school police, the Broward Sheriff's Office and local municipal law enforcement are in close collaboration to monitor our schools," Runcie said. "The safety of our schools is our highest priority."
