Motorcyclist Killed in Southwest Miami-Dade Crash

Someone trying to help didn't realize the man was pinned beneath a car, police said

A southwest Miami-Dade man died Friday after a hit-and-run crash between a Lincoln Town Car and his motorcycle, police said. A person who came over to help out pushed the car off of the motorcycle, not realizing the man was trapped beneath the car, according to police.

Carlos Penelas, 45, of SW 84th Court, was taken by air to Kendall Regional Medical Center's trauma center, where he died from his injuries, Miami-Dade Police said.

They said the crash happened on the 9000 block of SW 164th Street, near SW 90th Avenue, at 10:16 a.m.

The red Town Car was heading eastbound and the motorcycle was heading west when the car attempted to make a left turn onto 90th Avenue into the path of the cycle and they collided, police said.

Undercover units arrived on the scene and the people in the car made a run for it. A perimeter was quickly established and three people were apprehended, two of them juveniles, said police, who are interrogating them to find out why they fled.

A fourth person remains on the run, police added.

Police said they are looking into a potential link between the Town Car and burglaries in the neighborhood.

"There has been some burglary activity in the area with a red vehicle four-door,” Miami-Dade Police spokesman Detective Alvaro Zabaleta said. β€œIt’s very similar to the description we have behind us, so therefore we are looking into that angle.”

Police ask anyone with information on the incident to call Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS or 866-471-8477.
