Opa-Locka Police Captain Arrested On Drug Trafficking Charges

Veteran police captain taken into federal custody

Eight people including a veteran Opa-Locka police captain are facing federal drug trafficking charges involving cocaine, oxycodone and Ecstasy.

FBI agents arrested Capt. Arthur Balom at his home in Miramar on Thursday morning.

Federal prosecutors say Balom was among those indicted on four drug-related offenses. The charges carry combined maximum prison sentences of up to 40 years.

Balom and the others are set to make their first court appearances Friday in Miami. Court records did not indicate whether any of the suspects had lawyers.

Prosecutors say the indictment followed a two-year investigation into drug trafficking in Opa Locka involving federal, state and local law enforcement agencies.

"We're taking the matter very seriously," said Opa-Locka City Manager Bryan Finnie. "We are surprised, shocked and disappointed, but we will deal with this aggressively once the facts unfold."

A half dozen FBI agents were seen Thursday afternoon leaving the Opa-Locka Police Department with boxes of evidence.

"We are upset, however, we remain to be professional and we will service this community with pride and integrity," said Cheryl Cason, Opa-Locka Police Chief.
