A pedestrian was struck and killed by an SUV in Miami Beach early Thursday, police said.
The incident happened around 1:30 a.m. in the area of Collins Avenue and 39th Street, according to Miami Beach Police spokesman Juan Sanchez.
According to Sanchez, the Mercedes SUV was traveling north on Collins when it swerved into a parking lane and hit the pedestrian, who was standing behind a vehicle he was about to get into.
The unidentified pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the SUV was still at the scene when police arrived.
Sanchez said a light pole was knocked down as a result of the crash, and the northbound lanes of Collins between 38th and 40th Streets were closed to traffic.
Police are still investigating the accident.
