Authorities are investigating after a pedestrian was struck and killed by a driver who was trying to flee the scene of another crash in northwest Miami-Dade Wednesday morning, police said.

The incident began around 8:45 a.m. when Jonathan Eismann, 51, the driver of a Ford Explorer, was involved in a crash with a Nissan Sentra at the intersection of 1st Terrace and Northwest 72nd Avenue, Miami-Dade Police said.

Eismann tried to flee the scene northbound on Northwest 72nd Avenue when he lost control and struck the pedestrian, Juan Carlos Ruiz, 29, who was standing on the sidewalk, police said.

Police said Ruiz was pronounced dead at the scene and the driver of the Explorer was taken to a nearby hospital in stable condition.

Footage from the scene showed the Explorer appeared to have hit a nearby power pole.
