Police Chase Ends in Crash in Pompano Beach

People in custody after lengthy chase through Broward County

A felony traffic stop in Fort Lauderdale ended in a police chase and crash in Pompano Beach early Tuesday, officials said.

The incident began when an officer patrolling in the area of Broward Boulevard and Southwest 31st Avenue on the border of Fort Lauderdale and Lauderhill began following a green SUV, Fort Lauderdale Police Capt. John Labandera said.

The officer witnessed the SUV get into a confrontation with another car, and saw one of the occupants of the SUV pull out a handgun and point it at the other car, Labandera said.

Labandera said the officer attempted to stop the vehicle which tried to flee the scene, and a chase ensued.

The green SUV led officers on a chase for 15 minutes or so before it crashed on the I-95 off-ramp at Copans Road in Pompano Beach.

"It was somewhat of a lengthy pursuit, from the City of Fort Lauderdale north, through several jurisdictions on I-95, Pompano Beach, Deerfield Beach and back into the location that we're currently at," Labandera said.

Between three and four people were in the SUV, and they were all taken into custody, Labandera said. They weren't identified and it's unknown what charges they'll face.

Some of them suffered minor injuries and were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment, Labandera said.

No officers were injured and no other cars were involved in the crash. The incident is still being investigated.
