Exposito: I Was Offered Money To Leave

Miami Police Chief Miguel Exposito confirmed that he was offered $400,000 to leave his post

Miami Police Chief Miguel Exposito confirmed Thursday that he was offered $400,000 to leave his post.

Exposito wouldn’t name the Miami city official who made the offer in January, a year before his retirement.

“I never said who offered the money and I won’t, other than high ranking city officials,” he said. “Obviously a check was cut which I did see because the check does exist.”

Miami Mayor Tomas Regalado told NBC Miami that he didn't authorize the offer.

“I do not have the authority to authorize any check at all,” he said. “Only the city manager can do that, I don’t manage the purse of the city of Miami.”

Former city manager Tony Crapp Jr. told NBC Miami that he had known discussions had taken place relative to the chief’s possible departure, but he insists he knew nothing about the monetary offer.

Regalado and Exposito have been at odds over police shootings, gambling machines and corruption arrests.
