Kidnapping Investigation Leads to Police-Involved Shooting in Homestead

Officers shoot woman at Homestead trailer park during kidnapping investigation

A kidnapping investigation led to a fatal police-involved shooting in a Homestead trailer park Thursday morning, authorities said.

Miami-Dade Police spokeswoman Rosanna Cordero-Stutz said officers shot and killed an armed woman at the CocoWalk trailer park at 220 Northeast 12th Avenue during an investigation into the abduction plot.

The incident began when family members walked into a police station Wednesday and told officers two people had been abducted and were being held for ransom, Cordero-Stutz said.

The kidnappers told the family members they wanted $250,000 for the victims, both males aged 17 and 19, Cordero-Stutz said.

"At this time we do not know why the kidnappers think they could have asked for this amount of money," she told NBC 6.

Police investigated the abduction through the night and the investigation led them to the trailer park, Cordero-Stutz said.

When officers got to the location, they found the two victims and encountered the armed female suspect.

Third Shootout Suspect Surrenders

Officers opened fire, killing the unidentified woman, Cordero-Stutz said. No officers were injured.

Five other suspects who were in the home were taken into custody and were being questioned.

"At this time we don't know why these kidnappers think that they could ask for this amount of money," Cordero-Stutz said. "As you can imagine, we're still trying to figure out exactly who these individuals are and also what the family's status is in all of this."

One of the victims was severely beaten and tortured and was being treated at a nearby hospital, Cordero-Stutz said.

"Unfortunately one of the victims was severely beaten and apparently tortured by these individuals," Cordero-Stutz said.

The incident is still being investigated.
