Slaying Prompts Deadly Standoff in North Miami Beach

One man was apparently slain by a friend, who was then killed himself in a standoff with police

Authorities are continuing to investigate the deaths of two men in North Miami Beach Thursday night after the discovery of a body in one man's home prompted a police standoff that shortly claimed his life.

The parents of Jonathan Scott Woolfson had asked his friend Troy Longhurst to go check on their son Thursday night after his behavior appeared erratic.

When Longhurst didn't return, authorities said, Woolfson's parents went to their son's townhome on NE 27th Avenue and found Longhurst lying in a pool of blood on the floor.

Unable to reach their son, Woolfson's parents called police.

Responding officers quickly went into the home to pull Longhurst out, but couldn't get Woolfson to come out, authorities said.

Police said Woolfson told them, "God told me to kill him" and yelled out strange comments that didn’t make sense.

Officers tried tear gas and negotiations, authorities said, before Woolfson eventually emerged from a bathroom and was fatally shot.

A gun was found next to his body in the house, according to police, though the circumstances of the shooting weren't immediately clear.

Authorities said four or five shotguns and a small amount of marijuana were also found inside the home.

"It was definitely unsettling," said neighbor Dan Taft. "It's upsetting that it happened so close to where I live ... It can happen anywhere, anytime."
