Police: Officer Fired At Man in Self-Defense

The officer wasn't injured, but driver was hospitalized in critical condition

Authorities say a Homestead police officer shot a man in a pickup truck in self-defense.

Miami-Dade County police spokesman Javier Baez says the officer was searching for a stolen vehicle about 1:30 p.m. Sunday. He spotted the van and approached it.

At that point, Baez says, the man inside the vehicle suddenly accelerated.

Baez says the officer fired at the man in self-defense.

The Miami Herald reported the officer was not injured, but the driver was taken to Jackson Memorial's Ryder Trauma Center in critical condition.

No further details were immediately available.
