A settlement amount of $1.875 million was reached between the Miami-Dade County School Board and the family of a teen who was stabbed to death while at Coral Gables High School, according to the law firm representing the family.
Andy Rodriguez, 19, faces life in prison after being found guilty on Aug. 2 of second-degree murder in the September 2009 death of 17-year-old Juan Carlos Rivera.
The Haggard Law Firm confirmed the Rivera family will receive $700,000 now, and then they must wait for lawmakers to approve the bill filed by their attorney for the remaining amount. There is a cap amount for lawsuits against government sovereignties and the legislature has to give permission for the rest, the firm said.
It took Miami Dade jurors just three hours to declare Rodriguez guilty after hearing prosecutors argue that Rodriguez, jealous over attention allegedly being paid to his girlfriend, pulled out a knife during a fight he instigated with Rivera.
A telephone message left with the school board after normal business hours on Friday wasn't immediately returned.
