A 40-pound turtle with papillomas was rescued by FWC Friday morning in Islamorada.

A turtle was rescued in the Florida Keys Friday morning thanks to a friendly boater who contacted Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation.

A 40-pound green turtle, also known as “Pat”, was unable to dive due to papillomas. Shawn Mahynske, a boater, spotted the turtle, but couldn’t rescue Pat due to a leg injury, so he contacted FWC.

Officers Mattson and Bogue responded and safely returned the turtle to the FWC dock at the Whale Harbor channel in Islamorada.

Pat may not have survived if he was left in the ocean much longer, according to FWC.
